On the path to healing, setbacks are inevitable. When they happen, it can feel frustrating and add to the weight of an already aching heart. It’s easy to believe that progress should be a straight line, moving steadily forward, but the truth is, healing is rarely that simple. It’s a winding road with moments of strength and clarity, followed by days when the pain resurfaces unexpectedly.
If you find yourself back in a place you thought you had left behind, know this: you are not failing. You are not broken. You are simply human.
The Nature of Healing
Buddhism teaches that everything in life is impermanent (anicca)—including our emotions, thoughts, and pain. Some days, you might feel lighter, as if the burden is finally lifting, and then suddenly, grief, sadness, or anxiety returns like a wave crashing onto the shore. But just as the waves rise and fall, so too will your emotions. A difficult moment doesn’t erase the progress you’ve made; it’s just part of the natural rhythm of healing.

Meeting Setbacks with Kindness
Instead of judging yourself for backsliding, try offering yourself the same compassion you would a dear friend. If someone you love were struggling, would you tell them they’re failing? Or would you remind them that healing takes time, that they are doing the best they can? Direct that same kindness inward.
Here are a few mindful ways to navigate setbacks:
Pause and Breathe – When emotions feel overwhelming, take a deep breath. Anchor yourself in the present moment and remind yourself that this feeling is temporary.
Observe Without Judgment – Notice your thoughts and emotions without labeling them as “good” or “bad.” Instead, simply acknowledge them: I see you, sadness. I feel you, frustration. By naming emotions without attaching to them, you create space for them to pass.
Reframe Your Perspective – A setback doesn’t mean starting over. It’s just another step on the journey. Every time you navigate pain, you’re building resilience and deepening your understanding of yourself.
You are not where you once were. You are still moving forward, even if today feels heavy. And no matter how many times you stumble, you are always, always worthy of love—especially your own.🩵
Inward & Onward,

So true 🫶🏻
